From Spice Waste to Sustainable Power: Spice Manufacturer’s Journey Towards Circular Economy with Biochar and Biogas

    Introduction

A leading spice manufacturer in India faces significant challenges in managing organic waste from its production processes at its factory in Gujarat. With a growing focus on sustainability, they are exploring innovative waste management strategies to convert organic waste into valuable resources such as biochar and biogas. ASQI conducted a detailed study to propose an innovative waste management solution for the client, focusing on converting organic waste into valuable resources like biochar and biogas.

    Waste Sources and Types

The organic waste generated at the manufacturer’s factory comes from various sources:

    • GGP Waste: Ginger, Garlic, and other plant-based waste materials.
    • Expired/Returned Spices: Spices that fail quality checks or are returned.
    • Kitchen and Canteen Scrap: Food waste from the staff kitchen.
    • Other Organic Biodegradable Materials: Jute and natural fiber bags used in raw material hauling.

These waste streams are currently disposed of in ways that are harmful to the environment and provide no additional value. This not only leads to increased environmental degradation but also represents a missed opportunity for circularity and value generation
