Biochar: Nature’s Own Carbon Capture and Storage!

    Background

Farmers and agricultural enterprises are facing numerous obstacles, including the need to reduce their carbon footprint and effectively manage their organic waste, all while maintaining soil fertility and productivity. There is a need for sustainable soil management practices that align with global carbon reduction initiatives. ASQI is currently implementing one of the IPCC identified promising solutions: Biochar. It’s a charcoal-like substance produced through the pyrolysis of biomass, including crop and food waste.  Biochar’s benefits extend beyond soil enhancement, as it also contributes to carbon sequestration and offers potential for generating carbon credits.

    Process

Our agricultural supply company partnered with ASQI to implement biochar, with a focus on carbon sequestration and financial returns through carbon credits. We processed 3,000 tons of agricultural waste, which resulted in 1,200 tons of biochar. This biochar was produced via pyrolysis, which converts biomass into a carbon-rich substance that is then added to the soil. Each ton of biochar sequestered around 2 tons of CO2e, locking carbon into the soil for over 100 years. This improved soil health while contributing to long-term carbon reduction goals.

Besides carbon sequestration, it helpedsoil health by enhancing water retention, soil porosity, cation exchange capacity, and nutrient levels etc.

    Carbon Credits generation

For every ton of biochar produced, we earned approximately 2 CORCs (Carbon Removal Credits), each valued at $100. With 1,200 tons of biochar, we generated around 2,400 CORCs, resulting in an additional $240,000 in revenue through carbon credits.

    Result

By working with ASQI to include biochar, the firm was able to reduce its carbon footprint and open up new revenue streams with minimum investment. In a similar manner, we can demonstrate to you how biochar can help offset your carbon emissions while improving your financial performance and giving your company an edge in a sustainable business model.
